Dedicated to my loving wife, Lila
Bridges are amongst the many other things they are monuments to human creativity, ingenuity and engineering prowess. Günther Komnick has selected some famous bridges around the world, to America, Asia and Europe, showing how humanity has overcome the topographical barriers to facilitate trade, neighbourliness and the spread of civilizations. The bridges may be small, simple structures or heroic achievements spanning bays, valleys and large rivers and also fulfil an aesthetic imperative. In short, bridges are amongst the most heroic achievements of cultures all around the world, providing networks and become symbols of prestige and represent the finest of what a particular society can achieve. They draw upon the financial, engineering and planning skills and resources from all over the globe, or in ancient times, resources from all over the world known by their builders.
