Photobook of transport

Dedicated to my loving wife, Lila

Clearly transport is intimately linked to some of the other books featured in this collection, namely those dealing with agriculture, trade and bridges specifically. Bridges can be seen as being a part of a transport network, but the goods being transported is of overriding importance. This Komnick aptly illustrates in this lush and imaginative volume which includes lively images of people availing themselves of whatever means to travel, to sell their wares. Others make their living by providing the means, the ships for travel by sea, such as the enormous "flotels” that attract the leisure travellers. This is contrasted with humble Arab dhows which have been plying the Indian Ocean for centuries, selling fish or even slaves right up into the late 19th century.
Ubiquitous is the bicycle, and its motorised companion, the scooter or Vespa, that clog the major cities of the so-called developing world. Japanese bullet trains, trucks, buses and trains give us an insight into how people have adapted their circumstances to their need to get to where they have to be. Donkeys, carts, river boats, house boats, elephants and sedan chairs are also included in this fascinating glimpse into the wide range of means people to use to get around. Significantly, at the end of this book we see a sepia photograph of the author proudly standing next to his Mercedes 219 in years gone by. I wonder if he has kept that gem of a car?
